I and my partner have 106 acres an 1 1/2 hours from Perth. So far we have established Marron and Silver Perch in 4 specially designed ponds. We want to build a strawbale house. We have a designer(an old school friend not seen for about 30 years) who has built all over the world and designed and built in straw bales) We are not new to different building as we currently live in a rammed limestone house, but as the property is in the country we will be doing much of the work ourselves. Or at least I will as I retire at the end of the year. Our plan is to have a small comfortable place for us with (as we can afford and have the time) about 4 guest bedrooms to provide respite for cancer sufferers as we have lost 3 friends recently and 2 more have been diagnosed recently.I am pretty handy but getting old, and my partner will not be able to give much time due to work commitments. We have been to a bale raising and learnt a lot. I am looking for some advice as the best way to start once the plans are done. eg should I order bales as soon as I know how many I need. What should I get to site before we begin. Do I need to mesh the walls. Can I use the red/grey clay on the property. Where can I source natural paints. Does anyone know if milk paint is OK to use. And any other helpful comments anyone can offer
Planet Ark has got a good range of environmently friendly paints (clay based etc).
If you plan to have a workshop for building the house, let me know and I'd love to help out. Plan to build my own...
Also check out the Durra straw panels for interior finish.
Luke on October 18 2009 06:42:29 Would the Durra panels (the pressed strawpanels) be an option? They both look nice and insulate at the same time. >>Read More
