Fire rating of lime sand render
pamelaf
Hi Guys,
Does anyone know what the fire rating might be for a lime/sand render coating approx 50mm thick i.e. several coats?

harald
Hi there. I know for certain that 90mm thick lime render is classified as a masonry wall by the RFS. I had plans approved by Blue Mountains City Council with this specification in a Flame zone, above 42kw. Hope that helps.

The ASTM test from a few years ago would put it at a 2 hour fire rating, assuming the details match. (assuming you do mean fire rating and not bushfire rating, as harald is referring to). However, getting it approved as such in Australia is a bit involved.

Thanks Guys-still researching ...I'm looking at a 50mm lime/sand render in a BAL 29 zone-have just spoken to Council and they are happy to pass this as things stand at the moment. My main concern is protecting the clients with insuring the house in case they do lose it in a fire.

Speaking to Bohdan Dorniak yesterday it seems a co-ordinated approach to funding another round of CSIRO testing is the only way through this technical quagmire. 50% of my current work is straw bale and all new buildings in our shire have to have a fire risk assessment done before plans go to Council. What's the situation for others out there?

Hi Pamela, somewhere somehow I think we'll need to do some serious thinking/testing/fund raising for straw bale construction.I'll be going to the Colorado straw bale conference next month- and there I'll be talking to some of the international boys and girls about what their views are on bushfire testing. I'll get back on the forum late September.

Would the Durra panels (the pressed strawpanels) be an option? They both look nice and insulate at the same time.
