I have concerns about the waterproofness of an internal render for a building that has some internal water exposure and wonder whether an internal finish of plywood could substitute for the internal render as it would still be vapour permeable?
My idea is to construct a steel prefab shed and use straw bales for cladding rather than steel, and abut the bales tight up against a plywood inner cladding and thus achieve a really good insulation level as well as appearance. The frame is inside the building. The straw bales thus achieve a really good insulation level as well as appearance.
Has anyone done this or have an opinion on it? |

Fire protection of the bale is relying on the render. You will find that Council may have a problem with what you are proposing.
Good luck

If you were worried about water, the plywood would not be a great option. Assuming you have to erect a timber stud frame to support the plywood, you chould still spray render the bales before cladding the frame. Fibre cement sheet could be an option (not effected by water). |

Interesting question ... how do people line a kitchen area against the inside of a straw bale wall?
Can this be tiled against the render (if it is a small section)
I realise tiling large areas could cause sweating and may start the bales to rot.

We plan to use recycledbricks for interior walls that are likely to be exposed to water. That way we figure that we get the best of both worlds. Easy to tile, waterproof and using something that would otherwise be landfill. |
